According to the Iran Book News Agency (IBNA), Reza Shirmarz, a prolific translator and author in the field of theater, in his latest authored book "I Think with My Eyes: The Visual Theater of Robert Wilson", presents an analytical examination of the works of Robert "Bob" Wilson, the renowned and influential American theater director and creator of productions such as "The King of Spain," "The Life and Times of Sigmund Freud," "Ka Mountain and the Gardiena Terrace," "The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin," "Lecture on Nothing," and "A Letter for Queen Victoria."
The book includes nine chapters: "An Introduction to Visual Theater," "The Life and Times of Bob Wilson," "Wilson, the Auteur Director," "Wilson and Dramatic Texts," "The Aesthetics of Wilson's Theater," "Wilson Through the Eyes of His Collaborators," "Wilson and David Lynch," "A Timeline of Wilson’s Works," and "Wilson in Images."
Robert Wilson, born in 1941 in Waco, Texas, is one of the most important avant-garde directors in contemporary world theater. He has had a significant impact on artists of the following generation. That said, prior to the publication of "I Think with My Eyes," only one independent book on this artist had been published in Iran: "Robert Wilson: The Theater of Space" by Maria Shevtsova.
Wilson’s play "Ka Mountain and the Gardiena Terrace" was performed in 1972 (1350 in the Iranian calendar) at the Fifth Shiraz Arts Festival and caused a major stir. The book "I Think with My Eyes" features numerous images from this performance.
In the preface to the book, Shirmarz writes:
"To be honest, the first challenge I faced while writing this book was that speaking and writing about Robert Wilson is difficult, because he is a champion of rule-breaking and tradition-defying. He leaves you no measuring stick with which to size up his works or analyze them within an aesthetic framework. And yet Wilson is an artist who is deeply visual and auditory. If you can think with your eyes and speak with your gaze, you are Wilson’s kindred spirit."
